What is a Mental Health Emergency / Crisis?
A mental health crisis can be an individual’s intensive emotional or behavioural response that is caused by the onset of and acute episode of mental illness that could be triggered by an event or change in a persons circumstances.
A person experiencing a mental health crisis will feel overwhelmed with their situation and unable to cope any longer. They may talk about harming themselves or others.
It is vital that a person experiencing a mental health crisis receives the correct care as soon as the crisis is apparent to prevent possible harm to the individual themselves or others around them and to prevent for the individuals mental health from further declining.
